Cops to verify mining truckers antecedents

TNN, Apr 10, 2010, 04.19am IST
MARGAO:

Truck drivers engaged in transportation of mineral ore in Quepem and Sanguem talukas will now have to get their antecedents checked and verified by the police. Those who fail to do so will not be allowed to get behind the steering wheel from Monday when the mining transportation along the Quepem-Curchorem route begins, police sources informed.

The latest move by the police is in line with orders issued by the South Goa district magistrate G P Naik to that effect, at a meeting held of mine owners representatives and law enforcing agencies at the collectorate last week. While local truck drivers will have to get their antecedents checked and verified by the police, those from other states will have to produce police clearance certificates from their native town police stations, as per the instructions issued by the collector.

The mamlatdars of Quepem, Sanguem, Canacona and Salcete have also been directed by the collector to issue residence certificates immediately on receipt of applications from mining truck drivers so as to enable them to obtain police clearance for employment.

Confirming that the police will strictly enforce the directives from April 12, Dy SP Rohidas Patre, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Quepem, said that police officers will be posted at various spots at Quepem, Sanguem, Curchorem and Cuncolim to ensure that the collector's directives are enforced in letter and spirit.

With more than 5,000 trucks plying along the roads of Sanguem, Quepem and Curchorem areas, the toughened approach of the authorities has obviously sparked anxiety among truck owners, as most have employed migrants from states like Orissa, Bihar and Karnataka to work as drivers.
