VGG visits ‘controversial’ projects at Sancoale

HERALD
June 4,2010
Activists of the Villagers Group of Goa (VGG) on Saturday visited various controversial real estate projects at Sancoale on the occasion of World Environment Day.

The VGG activists first proceeded to a hotel project along the NH-17B at Upasanagar that is under construction and later went near the BITS Pillani complex, where private forest land has been converted to accommodate a hotel project.

The VGG activities expressed shock that the Mormugao Planning Development Authority (MPDA) had allowed the builder to convert a green zone into settlement zone.

They later went to inspect a mega housing project of a noted Vasco-based builder, who is a close associate of a minister, which is coming up near the MES College.

Their final stop was at Matvem-Dabolim, where a portion of a hill has been cut for a proposed approach road leading to a hill-top real estate project.

However, the MPDA has issued a show-cause notice to the builder to stop barbed fencing following a complaint from Edwin Mascarenhas.

Interestingly, most projects are being built on eco-sensitive land and are facing either the Zuari River or Arabian Sea.

“Enough is enough. The government has to curb such blatant violations that have endangered the ecology of the State. Tourists are attracted to Goa because of its natural beauty and not the concert jungles,” said VGG Convener Joao Philip Pereira.

Edwin Mascarenhas alleged that the ODP of Mormugao taluka had been planned as per the whims and fancies of real estate sharks and accused the TCP of failing to act on illegalities of the builders.

Others present during the site visits included Prajal Sakardande, Simon Carvalho, Rui Araujo, Carmen Miranda, Frankey Monteiro, Audoot Naik and other activists.
